Colette Tim Raue in München

December 15 2017

We were gifted a nice dinner in münchen at Colette.  I had heard of Tim Raue from chef's table but haven't had the OPPORTUNITY to try his food until now, so i was very curious to try it out.  Fully aware that the Colette restaurants are a more casual and SIMPLER approach compared to his Michelin star RESTAURANT but I was very disappointment in the quality and the execution of the food.

As it was very cold outside, I was definitely craving something warm so the onion soup seemed like the perfect choice.  however it wasn't the traditional onion soup, instead it was an overly salty soup with a small piece of brioche covered in cheese.  it definitely wasn't what i was expecting, i do understand the idea of the deconstruction of the dish, however it lacked in execution.  the broth was tasty with the possible addition of red wine, however it was either OVERREDUCED or OVER-SEASONED as it quite salty.  the best part of an onion soup is the melted cheese ontop of the slightly crispy and soft bread, so i was DISAPPOINTED again that i only RECEIVED one piece of bread and off to the side.  if you want a traditional onion soup, UNFORTUNATELY you won't find it here.  The Rossini was much better and tastier however we found it a bit too cold, so it could have sat outside for a bit longer to get to room temperature.

i am always a sucker for suckling pig when it's on the menu, so i decided to order it. but what i got was Not suckling pig but a pork knuckle, so again not what i was expecting.  nevertheless you can't really go wrong with a deep fried pork knuckle but then being at colette i was expecting a twist or a different interpretation, in the end it was just a normal pork knuckle with some mustard and ginger and a side of mashed potatoes.  a quite boring dish that was described DIFFERENTLY on the menu.  However the one saving grace was the beef tenderloin, which was EXCEPTIONALLY delicious, PERFECTLY cooked with crispy pommes frites on the side.  Maybe that's what you have to order when eating here, just order the beef dishes and don't try anything else.  i really hope that this isn't the case but i am not sure if i am willing to give it another chance.

as we needed to use the gift card we decided to order some dessert.  the PROFITEROLES with chocolate mousse, nougat, and honey caramel were delicious but i would recommend to share them as four of them for one person is quite a lot unless you have a serious sweet tooth.  The sorbets were also very delicious, we were intrigued by the pumpkin passion fruit sorbet, it was a good idea however as passion fruit is such a strong flavor it overpowered any pumpkin flavor from coming through.

I am really sad to say that this was a real disappointment.  I understand that there are different standards and price points for restaurants by Michelin rated chefs, however this is an EMBARRASSMENT.  there are many top chefs that open more casual restaurants serving more accessible food but I feel that the standard of value for money should still be kept high and shouldn't dropped this low.  But I guess sometimes these restaurants are just to make money as they know people will continue to come because of the name and the association with that famous chef.  i am hoping it was just a bad night but UNFORTUNATELY it isn't a place that i would RECOMMEND unless you just want a delcious steak for a good value.
