Bucharest May 2019

May 17-19 2019

This was a super short weekend trip for a friend’s wedding and baby baptism. For what we saw of Bucharest city and the surroundings areas were very interesting and beautiful, I wish to go back someday to see more.

Traditional Romanian Dance

Second Course

what an interesting and unique celebration. it was first of all so nice to celebrate the happy couple and their new baby but it was also so great to see and spend time with old friends. everything was new to us but i think that is what happens when you have international friends that each wedding or celebration is so different and unique due to the culture of the couple and the couple themselves. i loved the traditional dances, didn’t understand at all what was happening but it was very fascinating. then we were asked to join in, it was a lot of fun. and throughout the night there were more dance performances as well as people just coming together to dance these traditional dances together. it was really nice to see all ages, young and old joining hands and joyfully dancing together. dancing and music really does bring people together. as for the food i only remembered to take a few pics but there was an EXCESSIVELY large amount of food, there was a fish course and bbq meat course, i could not eat all of it. now it makes sense why they dance so much IN BETWEEN courses, they need to make some room for the next course. the music changed towards the end of the night to something we were more familiar with and danced until we were kicked out. a wonderful celebration with great friends.

we had some time to explore bucharest before our flight in the evening. after a slightly late breakfast we slowly walked from the lake through the king mihai I park then through the “posh area” of dorobanti but then took a taxi to the old town, it was too hot to walk all the way. the buildings and houses we saw were very interesting as you have an unique balance of old and newly renovative or completely new BUILDINGS. in the old town you will also find interesting buildings like old banks and CHURCHES, we only had a few hours to walk around so we only experienced a short glimpse of the city. we will be back to see more.

we then went for a late lunch for some traditional romanian food, this restaurant was highly recommended. the weather was really nice and the patio was full, but i was actually glad that we sat inside. it was an old brewery that has kept its distinctive art nouveau interior. it was pretty cool to sit inside such an old building and the food was quite good too, however it is very heavy and filling food. so either go hungry or share. but it is also nice to go there for some cake or a beer. a definitely recommend for a more traditional experience.
