Husmanns Vinstue in Copenhagen

April 15 2025

As we needed to wait to check into our airbnb and it was lunchtime we decided to try this local Danish restaurant right across the street.

Warm liver pâté with bacon and mushrooms

Smoked leg of lamb with warm scrambled eggs

The interior

It seems that this charming restaurant has been serving customers since the year 1888, so I think they truly know what they are doing when it comes to their menu and service. Our waiter was exceptionally helpful in explaining the ordering process for the sandwiches, or smorrebrod, guiding us through the steps clearly. First you have the first course, then the meat course and then the cheese or sweet course. We are quite glad that we only ordered one fish and one meat, as it turned out to be quite filling and satisfying. When you find yourself in Denmark, you absolutely have to try smorrebrod, as it is considered the national dish. If you can bear it, they often enjoy drinking aquavit alongside it, which adds to the experience. There are plenty of establishments where you can sample this classic dish, with some being more tourist-oriented while others feel more authentic, such as Husmanns Vinstue, which is a delightful choice.
