Koi for Valentine's Day Dinner in München

February 14 2020

As we had spent many nights st home and enjoying home cooked meals, we decided as a treat we would go for a nice dinner in the city. we were recommended this place and thought to give it a try.

They did have a valentines day dinner but we opted out and ordered a la carte as we wanted to try more things and all the dishes are made to share. We started out with the tuna tartar, wagyu roast beef rolls, and some spicy EDAMAME. The tuna tartar was good but nothing so special. but it seems like a very popular dish as we noticed many of those dishes coming out from the kitchen, we sat right across from the pass so we saw everything that came out. HOwever the wagyu roast beef rolls we were ABSOLUTELY delicious, meaty, sour, a bit sweet and earthy. i would definitely order these again. for the edamame you could choose your topping so we decided on chili but maybe that was a bit overboard as i could only eat a few at a time as it did have quite a kick to it. a good start.

Tuna Tatar with Cripsy Rice, Yuzu, Soy (21€)

Wagyu Roast Beef Rolls, Cress, Daikon Wafu, Pomegranate (19€)

Next were the main courses of octopus, tenderloin and miso cod. we opt out of getting any sashimi or sushi rolls as we would be in Los angeles in a couple of weeks and would get our dose of it. and we wanted to enjoy and try other things on the menu. the octopus and scallops were good but nothing so memorable. the CHAROLAIS tenderloin was very tasty, it wasn’t the most expensive meat option on the menu as they have AUSTRALIAN and japanese wagyu beef. however it was cooked perfectly, the sauce was rich and divine and the parsnip chips added that little crunch. I love different textures. i am also always a sucker for miso cod, something about the combination of miso and that flaky cod. however sometimes they overdo it with the miso and the flavor is so overpowering but this one was just enough, but i did not understand the peppered cherries. not really my favorite or favorite combination with the miso cod. we also had a side of corn with matcha tea, also wasn’t so interesting.

Octopus, Scallops, Cauliflower, Lotos, Miso, Nori, Kimzu (32€)

200g Charolais Tenderloin, Black Truffle Portwine Tare, Parsnip Chips (35€)

Yuzu Miso Marinated Black Cod, Ginger, Pak Choy, Peppered Cherries (38€)

Chocolate Fondant, Black Sesame Ice Cream, Mango

of course we had to save room for dessert. i ordered the chocolate fondant with black sesame ice cream. one was to try their black SESAME ice cream for a comparison, it was good but i think our homemade version is better. and secondly it is chocolate fondant what else can be said except for oozing warm chocolate center.

i am always skeptical eating asian food in germany as it can be such a hit or miss, but i think i also have a strong bias after living several years in china and growing up in los angeles. sometimes what you get for the money at some asian restaurants in europe is DEFINITELY not worth it but you do find some that are worth it and ones you ACTUALLY want to come back to when you do get that craving. although koi is a bit pricey but i think it is worth it for a nice dinner out or a special occasion.
