Long Weekend in the Dolomiti Italy October 2019

October 3-6 2019

As it was a holiday on a Thursday we decided to take a long weekend trip to northern Italy for some relaxation.

Well it seemed like everyone from Germany was also taking a long weekend so the drive down and back home were pretty horrible. THe roads were so full and so much traffic, if we decide to do something similar next time we will better plan our driving times.

we finally made it and after checking into the hotel we decided to walk around the little town of St. Ulrich. what a cute little town and we were also so lucky with the weather. we then took a little rest at the hotel then went off to a very nice dinner at Restaurant Tubladel. a little cozy place with great northern italian food. Best to make a reservation, we came early enough were we got a table but during high season it is a must to book a table in advance.

after breakfast at the hotel we were off to explore the area and do some hiking to see the dolomites mountains. we started off at plan de gralba then hiked up and around until we reached the gondola. it is a pretty easy going hike, the challenge is going uphill but you do have amazing views from all around. once we got to the gondola station we were quickly pushed into a small two person cabin ascending all the way to the top of the mountain. you can also hike up if you really want a challenge, quite a few people just came to do this hike up. once arriving on top of langkofel mountain which every way you use, you have an amazing view of the dolomites region and mountains. from there you can take the gondola back down or you can also hike down from the other side of the mountain. we would have liked to hike down however it would have taken us a very long time to then get back to our car. so down the gongola then hiked back to our car then we drove straight back to st. Ulrich for a late lunch of pizza.

We then went back to the hotel to enjoy the sauna and relax. after that we then had a bit of an appetite but didn’t want the 4 course menu offered at the hotel. so we went back to st. ulrich to a little wine bar, cercia enoteca, for some little snacks and local wine. THere are plenty of wines to try and if you happen to like something you can also purchase the bottles there to take home.

Again after our breakfast at the hotel we were off on another hike, this time we were going to hike up to st. ulrich seiser alm. there are two ways up, the easy or medium route. we decided to take the medium route but that route was more for the advanced. it was a constant straight steep uphill to the top. i barely took any pictures as i was just trying to survive, but it was worth it once reaching the top. instead of taking the gondola down we decided to hike down, however the route was a long way around the mountain and some parts of the route were closed so there were several detours but we finally made it back to the town of st. ulrich. be aware that the restaurants in town close at 14:30 so either try to make it back in time, pack a lunch or if you in the mountains find an alm or mountain cabin to have some food and rest, which is what we did.

another rest and sauna time at the hotel then off to dinner. also note that during off peak season (april to october) many of the restaurants are closed so it’s best to stick to the larger towns like st. Ulrich and st. cristina or hotels.

We thought we had left early enough, right after breakfast but everyone else was also making their way back to Germany. So the roads were full with so many route changes due to the traffic. but we finally made it back and were so lucky that the weather had changed on sunday and not before. the dolomites is normally known for its skiing however in the warmer months you can use the mountains in other ways like hiking and mountain biking. i would definitely making a trip there in which every or every season, it is really a beautiful place.
