Paris January 2018
January 18-23 2018
I was heading to Paris for my second trade show of the year to help a friend out with her clothing brand. A fun but extremely busy trip so unfortunately I didn't see much of the city. But luckily I was still able to enjoy some delicious food while i was there. Here are some highlights from the trip.
well i was actually glad to be inside for most of the day as the weather in paris wasn't that great. cold, rainy, and wet.
as my father and some family friends were in town, i didn't need to worry about finding some places to eat for dinner. The first night we went back to Les Enfant Rouge and the second night to Enyaa. Post from these dinners will come soon.

Le Récamier
As everyone had left, i finally could have dinner with the team. the dinner was arranged at le récamier, which we soon found out was famous for their soufflés and did they have a selection. so we obviously ordered both savory and sweet soufflés. They were all very delicious and all were so light and fluffy. it is amazing how they are able to make so many soufflés in different flavors, as soufflés are not the easiest thing to make as the batter and timing are so crucial. however the service that night was pretty bad, i am hoping that it was just because we were a large group. nevertheless the food was good, a recommend especially if you like soufflés.
To start off, we had to order some Foie Gras!

114 Faubourg
finally the last day of the show and we were treated to a fancy dinner at 114 faubourg, a michelin one star restaurant. what a great way to end this work trip!
it was decided that we would have the 114 faubourg menu consisting of five courses.
the first course was a crab dish but as i am allergic to crab they were able to substitute it for me. so for my main course i had beetroot marinated with sherry vinegar and fresh cheese smoked with haddock. it was tasty, a fresh and light dish to start off.
THe second course was prawns cooked on a griddle, watercress coulis, hazelnut butter, and buckwheat seeds. this one was absolutely delicious, the buckwheat seeds were a great addition for it added more texture and earthiness to the dish. the prawns were perfectly cooked. this would be one of my favorite dishes of the night.
the third course was scallops, roasted salsify and periwinkles in persillade, also with a sauce made from chicken stock that was poured table side. the last time i had periwinkles was in vietnam where they were still in the shell, so it was nice that we didn't have to dig them out. they added a chewiness to the dish as well as a bit of a sea flavor to bring the flavor of the scallops out. however i still prefer the prawn dish as it had more bold flavors and textures.
the fourth and main course was a mallard duck and foie gras pie and a side of vegetable salad with walnut oil. oh how this dish looked so familiar, the first thing that popped into my mind was culinary school and the seafood pithivier we had to make. i actually liked the dish we made, maybe i'll try to make it again. but i guess this would be the meat version. it was very enjoyable but quite rich as a meat pie should be. i like the presentation too as you can see the layers of meat. an excellent last dish.
and finally for dessert was a pavlova with red and black fruits and gold leaf. this was lovely. but who doesn't like pavlovas and the gold leaf was a nice bonus to make it that much more posh, michelin worthy.
it was a wonderful dinner experience, great tasting food and wine but mostly because of the people i dined with. many funny stories told and experiences shared. an exceptional ending to a busy but fun few days with some crazy and interesting people.

HolyBelly
as my flight was in the afternoon we decided to meet up for one last meal before i heading back to münchen. we were recommended this place as they had good pancakes, which they did. they have both sweet and savory pancakes so we decided to order both and share. both pancakes were light and fluffy. the savory one had a homemade bourbon butter on top which was super delicious, and the sweet one had the addition of roasted hazelnut which was a great idea and i might steal that idea for the next time i make pancakes. we also ordered a side of pulled pork and hash browns. i'm always a sucker for hash browns and i absolutely loved these. the addition of the pearl barley gave them an unique taste and texture, i would have never thought to add them into hash browns, but it worked. a definite recommend for a good brunch spot.
