Girl and the Goat 2 in Downtown Los Angeles

December 28 2022

we were so excited to dine here again as we had such a good experience the first time but unfortunately this time wasn’t nearly as good as the last.

Roasted oysters- clam baguette, sausage butter, oyster sauce mayo, finger lime

Goat Liver Mousse- crumpets, biscuit crackers, pickle Manquats, persimmon-apple jame, craisin relish

The menu

confit goat belly- xo broth, pickled persimmon, french lentils

Grilled corn- spiced coconut caramel, cotija, tajin (not pictured)

Sautéed green beans- fish sauce vinaigrette, cashews

pan roasted redfish- spiced tamarind-shrimp broth, crispy rice salad

Roasted mary’s hen- cashew “butter”, hen of the woods, sunchoke chips

hazelnut ice cream with chocolate magic shell, miso butterscotch budino- spiced tuile, passion fruit honey, honey whip and peppermint ice cream with candy cane crunch

what a disappointment, we were so looking forward to this dinner and having some of those same and delicious dishes as last time but nothing really worked this time. one our favorite dishes we had last time was the goat curry which was not on the menu so instead we tried the goat belly, what a disaster. firstly the portion size was tiny, I know the dishes are to share but for $32 we were expected more goat or something additional but just a tiny piece of goat with some lentils. also the fact that the restaurant is called girl and the goat, anything with goat should be a specialty but it was terrible, the meat was so dry and tough, actually glad it was such a small portion. The green beans were not great, the red fish and roasted oysters were ok, the goat liver mousse was actually good but then the crumpets were so fatty and inedible. the only really good dish was the grilled corn, it was a nice take on Grilled Mexican Street Corn or Elote, the spiced coconut caramel was very delicious, we actually tried to recreate it for our new years eve dinner at home.

either we ordered better last time or the new menu items that replaced the old items aren’t that great. in any case we were throughly disappointed this time and probably won’t be coming back. maybe it was an off night or maybe it feel into the la hype, we had heard that they tried to change the menu to fit more to the la taste but i think that was a mistake as there is too much going on and so many conflicting flavors that don’t work. I hope they do go back to cooking what they know, the dishes, flavors and ingredients that made them the talk of the town in chicago.
